Places that one can visit in Bundi

Many of us know that Jodhpur is known as the 'Blue City', but after visiting this small, unexplored city of Rajasthan, I got to know that Rajasthan have got one more blue city and that is 'Bundi'. Bundi has located about 35 km from Kota and 210 km from Jaipur. There are many natural as well as man-made places for one to explore in this city. The city contains many historical monuments for one to explore. Here, I am writing this blog to give a brief introduction to some of these places that one can visit in Bundi.

Bundi Fort:

Bundi Fort is another magnificent hill fort of Rajasthan. This fort is situated on one of the high hills of Aravali. This fort is popularly known as the Taragarh Fort (The Star Fort), as its ramparts spread out making a star like formation on the hill. The fort was built in mid 13th century by Rao Dev Hada. The fort contains four water tanks (baoli).

Garh Palace:

The Garh Palace is situated right at the foot of the Taragarh Fort. This palace is known for its lavish traditional murals and frescoes. The very famous is the Chitrashala (picture gallery), which is on the top of the Garh Palace and is open to the general public. The main entrance of the palace is an eye-opener.

The Nawal Sagar lake

Nawal Sagar:

Nawal Sagar is a square-shaped lake. This lake is situated just below the Garh Palace and right behind the Moti Mahal. The Nawal Sagar lake offers a magnificent reflection of the Garh Place. One can also witness a half-submerged temple of Lord Varun (Hindu god of water) in this lake. The lake was interconnected with various other baolis and the four water tanks of the Taragarh Fort.

The Raniji ki Baoli

Raniji ki Baoli:

Bundi has over 50 stepwells, of which only a handful have been maintained. The most spectacular stepwell in this town is the Raniji ki Baoli. It was built at the end of 17th century by one of the queens of Bundi, Rani Nathawatji. The Raniji ki Baoli is a 46 m deep stepwell and has some splendid domes. It's intricately carved pillars and walls are such an eye-opener. The baoli is one of the largest examples of its kind in Rajasthan.

The Sukh Mahal

Sukh Mahal:

As the name says 'Sukh Mahal', the pleasure palace of past rulers. This palace that sits on the water bank of the Jait Sagar lake. This palace was used by the royal family of Bundi as a summer palace. On the second floor, there is a room where Rudyard Kipling stayed when he was writing his novel, Kim.

Jait Sagar Lake:

The Jait Sagar Lake is around 2 km from the main Bundi town. This lake is 1.5 km long. The lake is encircled by hills and this lake gets sprinkled with lotus during the monsoon and winter months. almost more than half of the lake is covered with these lotus plants. The surroundings of the lake are extremely soothing and peaceful.

The Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri

Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri:

Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri or "84-Pillared Cenotaph" is a stone carved monument known as a chhatri. This chhatri is located outside the main Bundi town. It was constructed in late 16th century by Rao Raja Anirudh, Maharaja of Bundi. The structure has a large stone carved shivling at the center and is covered by a decorated stone carved roof which is supported by 84 pillars.
